The Blood donation process

Donating blood is a simple thing to do. Though the donation per se takes just about 8-10 minutes, the donation process from the time you arrive until the time you leave takes about an hour. Let me explain the steps involved.

Registration:
1. Registration of the prospective donor which includes filling up the donor consent form with information such as name, address, phone number, donor identification number (if you are a regular donor) and ID proof.

Health History and Mini Physical check up:
1. Health history is recorded by asking a few questions during a private and confidential interview about your health and the places you have recently travelled.
2. During your mini physical check up, various parameters like body temperature, hemoglobin, blood pressure and pulse are checked.

Donation per se:
1. You will be led to the donation area where you will be made comfortable on a blood donation bed / easy chair. The area on your arm will be cleansed and a brand-new, sterile needle will be inserted for drawing blood. This feels like a quick pinch and is over in seconds. If you are apprehensive, you can be given a local anaesthesia so that you will not even feel the piercing needle. Blood will start flowing into the sterile blood bag.
2. You can relax while the bag is getting filled. (For a whole blood donation, it takes about 8-10 minutes. If you are donating platelets, red cells or plasma by apheresis the collection can take up to 2 hours.)
3. When approximately a pint of blood has been collected, the donation is complete and a staff will remove the needle and place a bandage on your arm.

Refreshments:
1. Once the donation is over, you will spend a few minutes enjoying refreshments to allow your body time to adjust to the slight decrease in fluid volume.
2. After 10-15 minutes you will be allowed to leave the donation site and continue with your normal daily activities.

Leave the location with a sense of satisfaction. You are a Hero who has helped saving lives !!
